Cold Water Hints

Swimming in cold water can be challenging.  Keep a little warmmer with some of Amanda Hunt's hints.

  • definitely 2 caps! I'll bring a silicon one to wear underneath the Big Shoulders cap. Neoprene wasn't legal for my swim, so I havent' tried it but have heard very effective.
  • earplugs are a really good idea, though they tend to annoy me.
  • it really helps me to get in the day before. I can swim much longer in the cold if it's the 2nd or 3rd day in a row of getting in (impractical for Big shoulders....)
  • just sheer time in the water. Lots of short swims in cold water before the event helps. Also difficult to do!
  • eat heaps and don't be dehydrated or tired. Have a good breakfast.
  • get good and warmed up before the swim. Have a hot drink as close to the swim as possible. Mb even jump around a bit to get your core temp up before getting in.
  • put on 15 pounds :))))) hehe I did earlier in the year and it really helps with the cold.
  • it's more mental than you would ever believe. My best cold water stuff was always when I was in a good, positive mood!
  • if the water is very cold, you might get the wind knocked out of you for a while after getting in. Don't panic, mb do a little head-up breaststroke and relax and ease into it until you can get your head in and breath properly.

having said that, I did half an hour at 64 degrees the other day and was feeling uncomfortable at the end. Will try again this weekend. It's been a few months since I did cold stuff so maybe you lose the acclimatisation! Hope this is helpful.  I'm still learning too.
